Hoa Lu Cave near Tam Coc Ninh Binh – The start-up base of hero Dinh Bo Linh

Hoa Lu Cave is located in Uy Te commune, now Gia Hung commune near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. Hoa Lu Cave was the first base of warlord Dinh Bo Linh during the cause of unifying the country in the 10th century. The cave is located about 15 km from the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and 20 km by road to the North of Ninh Binh city. Although it is called a cave, this relic is an open-air valley of about 16 acres surrounded by circular mountains, where Dinh Bo Linh and the “Co Lau” shepherd children practiced military exercises in their youth. Hoa Lu Cave is located in the limestone mountain system running along the right bank of the Day River, coming from the Kim Bang region (Ha Nam) and Hoa Binh. The mountain here is about 200m high, is the wall separating Hoa Lu cave from the outside, looking from afar like a dragon lying in wait, protecting the base of the Dinh Bo Linh insurgent army from its early days. Hoa Lu Cave is located between four steep high mountains, has a nearly circular shape, about 200m in diameter, creating a majestic and towering natural wall.

There is only one way to enter the cave, which is a small alley about 30 meters high with jagged rocky slopes that are difficult to navigate. Today, the local government has built a road with about 240 stone steps winding into 9 sections (Symbolizing the Dragon image). Surrounding the outside of the cave is Cut lagoon, about 3 km long and 500 m wide, like a natural moat protecting it. From here you can proceed to the Day River. Hoa Lu Cave is located near Thuong Dao Street, an ancient road, going north to south commune near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. According to Phan Huy Chu (Lich Trieu Hien Chuong Loai Chi), during the Le – Trinh period, the Mac army often followed this path. About 2 km away is Boi River (coming from Hoa Binh), from Hoa Lu cave, to Hoang Long river, then to Day river to go to the East Sea or from Day river to Red river to Thang Long, or from Hoa Lu cave. Following the Boi River to the northwest is very convenient. Although Hoa Lu Cave is a remote area, it is an area with rugged mountains and forests, waterways and roads that are convenient for “retreating to be able to defend, advancing to being able to attack”.

On the mountain and at the foot of the mountain, from ancient times until now, there have been many reed flowers. During the season (around October), the flowers bloom completely white, and people can hear the cheers of the herdsman children rehearsing from somewhere. buffalo. According to history books, when his father died, Dinh Bo Linh and his mother returned to live next to the mountain god temple, now Long Vien temple (dragon garden) in My Ha village, Gia Thuy commune, Nho Quan. Every day, Dinh Bo Linh goes to herd buffalo and cut grass for his uncle, Dinh Thuc Du. Legend has it that Dinh Bo Linh herded buffaloes in Roc Xeo field and practiced reed flags in Hoa Lu cave (Lau valley), La valley, and Lui valley. All of these areas are on the left and right banks of the Boi River in Gia Thuy, Nho Quan communes, and Gia Hung commune near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. Because the above places are very close to Hoa Lu cave, Gia Vien, most history books confirm that he was born in Hoa Lu cave.
