Am Tien Cave – “Tuyet Tinh Coc” near Tam coc Ninh Binh

Nestled halfway up the mountain, with a charming mountain and water landscape, Am Tien Cave, part of the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital relic complex near Tam Coc Ninh Binh, is an attractive destination for tourists from near and far because of its beauty like “Tuyet Tinh Coc” in the movie Sword. famous “Condor Heroes”. Legend has it that this is where King Dinh Tien Hoang once built a execution ground to punish criminals and is also where Queen Mother Duong Van Nga became a monk in the last years of her life. Looking down from Am Tien Pagoda, you will see the vast space of the majestic landscape here with towering mountains and a clear blue lake stretching as far as the eye can see. Am Tien Cave is located in the Ngu Phong Son mountain range, including 5 peaks flanking the mausoleum of King Dinh Tien Hoang and the mausoleum of King Le Dai Hanh in Ma Yen mountain.

Most of the Am Tien cave area is a flooded valley, surrounded by rocky cliffs, a quiet space, creating a separate world. Previously, the road to the cave was quite dangerous, having to climb more than 200 stone steps over the cliff, but now there is a tunnel through the mountain into the cave, creating favorable conditions for tourists to visit the monument. From afar, the cave is shaped like a dragon’s mouth, so it is also called Dragon cave near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. Here, the scenery of mountains and rivers is majestic and wild. At the foot of the mountain is a blue lake with see-through moss, which people call Ao Giai. Algae and water creatures grow strongly, making the scene even more mysterious and poetic. In the cave, there are many stalactites shaped like mother nature with rice plants, money trees, Buddha’s hand fruits, lotus buds drooping with drops of water. Like many cave temples, the main cave of Am Tien cave is a temple worshiping Buddha and worshiping Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong. This is also a place to worship famous people of the Dinh Dynasty and Queen Duong Van Nga.

Legend has it that in the 10th century, with a rugged terrain halfway up the mountain, surrounded by deep lagoons and abysses, King Dinh Tien Hoang chose this area as a trial site, the cave was a place to keep tigers and leopards. At the foot of the mountain is Ao Giai, where the king raised crocodiles. People who commit serious crimes will be put into caves or thrown into ponds to deter others. It was also here that Queen Mother Duong Van Nga became a monk in the last years of her life. During the Ly Dynasty, Zen Master Nguyen Minh Khong once passed by the cave and saw that the negative energy was too heavy. He chanted sutras and preached Dharma day and night and renamed it Am Tien cave near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. The chanting of Buddhist scriptures gradually touched the animals and at the same time neutralized the souls of death row prisoners, and from then on this place became pure. Am Tien Cave is associated with the names of historical figures at the beginning of the nation’s founding in the 10th century, and was ranked as a National Historical and Cultural Monument in 1998. Today, the monument is being restored and embellished. and become an attractive tourist destination for domestic and international tourists.
